On the topic of TV being some sort of insidious tool that marketing reps use is, well, sort of ridiculous. Everyone needs to make a living. Some people make it in the advertising industry, where television is a very powerful resource to just ignore. If you're afraid that ads are having that much effect on you or whomever, turn the TV off. It's not a big deal. Ads are everywhere, the TV isn't some sort of odd exception.
